The first settlement was established in 1695 in what was then the British Colony of Virginia. A suburb of Washington, DC, it is home to many federal employees. Alexandria is located in a historic Civil War Era area and boasts many historic sites, as well as having a progressive business district. The National Trust for Historic Preservation selected Alexandria as one of the 2011 Dozen Distinctive Destinations.
Located in Old Town are Robert E Lee’s boyhood home, Gadsby’s Tavern and many other historic sites. Market Square in Old Town is believed to be one of the oldest continuously operating marketplaces in the United States, (from 1753 until present day).
