Lanark is a small town in central Scotland. It is located south east of Glasgow and south west of Edinburgh and within an hour's drive of both cities.
Lanark is a very attractive market town with a rich history, known for its links to the story of William Wallace, recently made famous in the film Braveheart.
The swift waters of the river Clyde gave Lanark prosperity during the industrial revolution, when they were harnessed to drive cotton mills in the Clyde valley. Today, there is little industry in Lanark and many residents commute to work in Glasgow and Edinburgh. Its shops serve the local agricultural community and surrounding villages. There is a large modern livestock auction market on the outskirts of the town.
